A brief history of Snap the Lakes
I registered the domain Snap the Lakes on the 22nd of October 2002, the intention was to create a Lake District photo gallery including a Photo of the Day feature using my own photographs and those of contributors. The inspiration for this came from Ann Bowker’s site Mad about Mountains and John Dawson’s Lake District Walks.
Snap the Lakes went live on the 7th November 2002 initially using all my own photographs. John Paterson contributed the first photo of Cat Bells, it featured as Photo of the Day on 17th November 2002. The last photo appeared on the 11th June 2007, an excellent aerial photo of Hallin Fell by Simon Ledingham. The Photo of the Day script written by Schlabo’s Scripts is still available to download today.
In February of 2011 I updated the site using a SEO friendly gallery script called Plogger. This worked very well but with the advent of mobile and tablet devices the fixed layout did not suit the new technology. In 2015 after hearing that Google would penalise sites in their search results that were not mobile friendly I decided to update the site again using WordPress. This is the site that is live today.
