Barry blames his wife, Liz, for his infatuation with The Lakes - "When I met her she lived in Lancashire (whilst I have always lived in Hampshire which is a bit of a handicap for Lakeland visits) and was a keen fellrunner and long distance walker. At the time I did none of these things but from my first visit to The Lakes I was hooked and I now run, mountain bike and enjoy long distance walking events"

They try to get to The Lakes four or five times a year, their daughter, Katie, bagged her first peak under her own steam when she was 2. Now 9, she's a seasoned fellwalker with more than 120 Wainwrights ticked off!

Barry has been seriously studying the art and techniques of landscape photography for the last 15 months since buying a Fuji S2 Pro digital SLR, ostensibly for astrophotography. "I love the immediacy of digital and the vibrancy and lack of grain of the images I can capture with this camera."

"My style, if I have one, is all about capturing colour and light, to give a feel for the landscape as I saw it and more importantly felt it at the time. Many times I am capturing fleeting instances and it is this coming together of conditions that differentiates the shots I continue to enjoy and those that are merely satisfactory"
