A brief history of Snap the Lakes

The domain Snap the Lakes was registered on the 22nd of October 2002, the intention was to create a Lake District photo gallery including a Photo of the Day feature using my own photographs and those of contributors. The inspiration for this came from Ann Bowker’s site Mad about Mountains and John Dawson’s Lake District Walks.

Snap the Lakes went live on the 7th November 2002 initially using all my own photographs. The first contributor was John Paterson whose photo of Cat Bells featured as Photo of the Day on 17th November 2002. The last photo appeared on the 11th June 2007 and was an excellent aerial photo of Hallin Fell by Simon Ledingham. The Photo of the Day script was written by Schlabo’s Scripts and is still available to download today.

I started working on this new site in February 2011 initially the Visitor Gallery featured The Lake District UK’s group pool, fed from Flickr and a small gallery of my own using Flash also fed from Flickr. Having done some research I decided to move away from Flash and use a more SEO friendly gallery script. Plogger was my final choice and this proved relatively easy to alter to fit the design of the new site which itself was inspired by Michael Carruth’s Flogr.

All the photographs from the original Photo of the Day section from 2002 - 2007 are now live on the site. Unfortunately with over 800 photos in the gallery it has not been possible to update all the links to the respective contributors websites, please accept my apologies. I am also gradually adding the original Visitor Galleries, the first one being John Paterson, featuring his photos of Jack’s Rake.
